It seems like the real warm weather is here, and it’s time to adjust our skin care regimen. Many of us can stop our “super” moisturizing cleansers and use something that’s more effective in preventing our pore congestion from body oils and sun screen. Also, don’t forget a wash cloth for an inexpensive way to get a mild exfoliation and cleansing.

Warm weather also means lighter weight moisturizers should be used.

Unlike years ago, most skin types and ethnicities can indulge in gentle, safe chemical peels. With a larger selection of acids, chemical peels offer skin renewal with smooth even texture and a clarity that was once only obtained with a significant down time. Unlike the older traditional peels newer formulations penetrate into the skin more slowly, eliminating the sting and discomfort and therefore they are an excellent choice for sensitive skin types. Some of my favorite peels are azelaic, mandelac and lactic. These are bio-compatible and help with dryness, superficial melasma, acne, folliculitis and rosacea. Aloe, milk thistle, allantoin and arginine are just some of the ingredients added to peels for their anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. As with any treatment, continuous maintenance will give better long term benefits, especially for those with melasma or acne. Every skin type can now feel better and look more radiant. What is a Physician Assistant?

Physician Assistants are mid-level practitioners who are trained and licensed to diagnose and treat medical conditions.They attain patient medical histories, perform physical examinations and procedures, prescribe medications, perform and decipher tests, provide information on preventive health care and refer patients to specialists as needed.

PA’s are medical professionals who have their own license and do not work under a physician’s license. They should not be mistaken for medical assistants, who carry out mostly administrative and basic medical duties.

With their education based on the medical model, Physician Assistants not only go through an extensive accredited PA program they must also pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam. After that they must take a national recertifying exam every six years as well as register their certificate every two years and maintain continuing medical education (CME) credits.

When seeing a Physician Assistant, with their thorough training and educational standards, you can be confident that you will receive quality care.

“What can I use for my sensitive/dry skin?”

This is one of the most common questions I get asked each day. As someone who also has sensitive skin, I understand the concerns that come along with not knowing what products are appropriate, and the frustration when a product I’ve spent money on doesn’t work or gives me a rash! As a Dermatology Physician Assistant, I have personally been able to try many different products, as well as see results on my patients. These are still my favorites…

Dove Sensitive Skin Bar or Body Wash (Unscented)

Cetaphil Gentle Cleanser or Cerave Hydrating Cleanser for the face

Cetaphil Cream for moisturizing the face and/or the body twice a day (remember, cream not lotion). There is also Cerave Cream which is very good as well. Remember, it is important to moisturize in order to help sustain the moisture barrier of your skin.

Fragrance-free detergents such as All Free Clear (and avoid fabric softeners).

As the weather gets colder, dry and sensitive skin can become more of an issue. I know you all love them, but avoid long, hot showers because this can add to the the problem. And, don’t forget to use these products, they can make all the difference. But, if you are still having trouble with your skin, make an appointment. summer exfoliation

With sun, water and humdity, all these factors can dry the skin out. Some of you put a hold on your chemical peels which is a good thing, especially if your outside all summer. But you can get great exfoliation treatments that are not chemical, yet will smooth the skin, create cell renewal, rejuvenate and put antioxidants into your skin. These are safe gentle treatments that can be done on all skin types. Still use caution and refrain from any Rx, scrubs, waxing, aha’s a few days prior. We will be offering these treatments in a few weeks. Keep up with keeping your skin smooth!
